I am currently writing a research paper on Black women’s participation and influence on postmodern dance. I plan to do this by examining the works of Blondell Cummings, Bebe Miller, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. I plan to research how the intersection of gender and race impacted the creation of their work and whether it impacted spectator responses to the work that they created. I would also like to research the legacy that their work has left. I believe this research will benefit me because it relates to my overall research theme of African American women in concert dance. I hope to be able to use this work in the future to present at conferences and develop myself as a scholar.
Research Questions:
- How did being a Black woman impact Blondell Cummings, Bebe Miller, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s ability to create work?
- Did spectators view the work of Blondell Cummings, Bebe Miller, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar differently because of their identities as Black women?
- What is the legacy of Blondell Cummings, Bebe Miller, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar work?
